frequently asked questions

Why do I have to pay a cover charge to see the cats?

We provide much-needed temporary housing for cats in need of permanent homes and pay for all the costs associated with caring for these cats while they are living at Buckminster’s (food, litter, toys, supplies, medical care, etc.), so it’s necessary to charge an entrance fee to cover these costs plus rent, utilities, staff and other overhead.

Do I need reservations?

Not necessarily. Walk-ins to the Cat Zone are accepted as space allows, but we recommend you book a time slot online in advance, especially on weekends, so that your kitty time is guaranteed!

Can I cHANGE or Cancel my reservation?

Reservations may be canceled up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. You can change your reservation date/time by clicking on the "Modify Reservation" link in your confirmation email up to 24 hours prior to your visit.

Do you host private events at Buckminster’s?

Yes! We would love to host your birthday party, shower, work retreat, girls’ night out event, or any other type of celebration. Please see the Private Events tab for more details.

Are there age restrictions?

Children under the age of 5 are not allowed in the Cat Zone. All children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult, and there must be at least one adult present for every two children under the age of 10.

Can I bring my own cat to the cafe?

Nope! We have all the cats you need!

Food and cats? What does the health department say?

Our designers have produced a bifurcated space that effectively seals off the food service areas from the area in which the cats live. This set-up is dictated by Health Department codes and means that even people with cat allergies can patronize the cafe side of the space and observe the cats through the glass partition. If you are booking Cat Zone time you may carry your food and drink in from the cafe! Just please don’t feed human food to the cats!

Are you looking for volunteers?

Once we determine our volunteer needs we will post opportunities on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Please be aware that volunteering in the cat zone involves more than just petting cats (although you will DEFINITELY be able to pet cats). Cleaning, scooping litter, and interacting with cat zone guests will all be responsibilities of our Cat Zone volunteers.

I found a NEIGHBORHOOD stray, can I BRING IT TO YOU?

Unfortunately, we cannot accept any cats into the Cat Zone that have not been thoroughly screened and vetted by our rescue partner, Second Chance Sheltering Network, Inc. Stray cats directly off the streets are often sick and can be carriers of diseases that would endanger the health of the cats in our care. If you find a stray cat, please contact a local shelter—they are equipped to handle and care for at-risk cats.

Do you sell gift certificates?

Yes! Physical gift cards are available for purchase in the cafe. They can be loaded with any amount and are redeemable for Cat Zone visits, food and drink, and merchandise. Please note: gift cards cannot be used to book online reservations for the Cat Zone. If you wish to book ahead of time and use your gift card, please call the cafe directly (716-436-6000) and we will block a time slot for you. Pay with your gift card when you arrive for your booking!
