the adoption process

A message From our rescue partner, Second Chance Sheltering Network, Inc.

Every rescue cat has experienced trauma in one way or another, whether it be from the time they spent on the street, often cold and hungry, or from trips to the vet after their rescue, or from moving between their foster home and the adoption site. We seek to pair our rescues with a home best suited for them based on their personality and their known history.

how it works

  • Step 1: Make a Cat Zone reservation to come in and visit with the cats in person. See the reservations page to book your spot.

  • Step 2: Spend an hour interacting with our roomful of adoptable cats.

  • Step 3: Confirm the name and description of the rescue cat or kitten you are interested in adopting.

  • Step 4: Place a call to our rescue partner, Second Chance Sheltering Network, Inc., to submit a verbal application. The adoption hotline is (716) 652-6051. You may have to leave a message — please be patient! The rescue needs to speak with you to determine if a particular cat is a good fit for you and your household based on what we have learned about the cat during the time it has been under our care. Please note: you MUST be at least 21 years of age to adopt.

  • Step 5: Once verbal approval is provided it will be communicated to the staff at Buckminster’s and we will get in touch with you to schedule a mutually agreeable time to perform the adoption.

At the time of the adoption we ask for an adoption donation of $150 which may be paid by cash or check (made out to Second Chance Sheltering Network, Inc.). No credit or debit cards are accepted for the adoption donation portion of the transaction.

To confirm your identity, we require that you to present a valid driver’s license or government photo ID at the time of the adoption.

There will be some paperwork to complete, so please be prepared to read and sign the adoption rules and disclosures.

Please bring a plastic or soft zippered cat carrier to transport your new family member home. We do not allow our rescue cats to be transported in cardboard carriers.

Rest assured that all Second Chance adoptable rescues are:

  • Tested for Feline Leukemia/FIV

  • Spayed/Neutered

  • Microchipped

  • Vaccinated (Please note that some kittens may require additional vaccinations/booster shots after adoption. These are the responsibility of the adopter.)

  • Dewormed

  • Have had flea control applied

  • …and all come with a courtesy wellness visit certificate!

  • Step 6: We love sharing success stories with our community and request that all of our rescues be photographed with their new forever families!

  • Step 7: Once you have taken your new family member home you will receive a communication from one of our volunteers to check in on how things are going. Additionally, home visits may take place to ensure everyone is settling in.
